Fresh off a historic 2023-24 season that featured a program-record 31 wins – highlighted with a 29-game winning streak and a MAAC regular and postseason championship – Fairfield returns nine players from their rotation, their top-five scorers and added talent in both the transfer portal and in their high school recruiting classes, making the Stags the most dangerous mid-major in the nation. “We’re trying to be one of the best teams in the country – and I leave out “mid-major” intentionally,” says head coach Carly Thibault-DuDonis, the reigning MAAC, All-Met and ECAC Coach of the Year. 2024-25 Breakouts for Each MAAC Team

Like every other conference in the nation, the MAAC has experienced more widespread roster overhaul than ever before. Noting this, most teams are set up for several players to step up, breakout and make an impact. Here’s a breakout pick for each team in the MAAC: Canisius / Cam Paleese / 6’5 / 195 Sophomore New Canisius head coach Jim Christian previously coached at Boston College, Ohio, TCU and Kent State. While he was unable to sustain success at the high-major level, Christian’s teams at Ohio and Kent State were strong interior scoring teams that were aggressive on defense and on the boards. Cam Paleese, one of the two returning Golden Griffins from last year, brings enough versatility in the backcourt to develop into Canisius’ most important player this season. 2024-25 Manhattan Season Preview

By Joe Budzelek Winning three of their first four games, Manhattan’s auspicious start in their first season under the lead of new head coach John Gallagher took an abrupt stop in the second half of their matchup against UConn with sophomore guard Brett Rumpel tearing his ACL. Starting that game, the Jaspers lost nineteen of their next twenty-one games as Manhattan sorely missed Rumpel’s creativity and production in the halfcourt. Within that slump, Manhattan’s 89-57 loss at Saint Peter’s was the team’s distinctive nadir that signaled major changes ahead. “I got done with the game, went into the locker room and I literally laughed to my staff,” says Manhattan head coach John Gallagher, “And I said guys, a year from today, we will not have a roster built like this.” Gallagher adds, “What I mean by that is that now, we’re tough, we can go small, we can go big and we can play it straight.
